The fabric is light, soft, suitable for skirts, dresses, but also for airy curtains or placemats.

Cotton poplin in general is densefabricsplain weaveoutnumberedwarp threadsmade of worsted yarn. The fabric has a matt sheen, fine cross ribbing on the surface.

The name popeline probably comes from the name of the town of Popering in Belgium, which was a centre of the cloth craft in the Middle Ages, or from the French word papeline = papal, after the silk fabric produced in the 15th century in Avignon, which was the seat of one of the popes.
